In this tecnocato episode, I show how I created a total lunar eclipse video with Apple’s Motion and Final Cut Pro… but only the general steps, so you can do the same in 2010 with your own software and hardware. Talk about planning ahead! This is how I created a composition with the actual video shot with my camera.
This is the HD (high definition) version of the video. Please send comments to tecnocato@tecnocato.com.
*** RE-POST ***
I am re-posting this episode because the original was not encoded to provided the highest quality at 720p24. This one should look a lot better on your computer and Apple TV… everything should look smoother and better. The “bad” video was only available for twelve hours so if you do not have it, do not worry. This is the right one.

This is how we viewed the total lunar eclipse in the north coast of Puerto Rico. I made this video as fast as I could so it has not been processed to stabilize the movie and keep the Moon in the center at all times…. that will take longer and I am planning of posting it in HD.

Learn how to closed-caption your QuickTime videos and view captions in iTunes, QuickTime and the iPhone/iPod Touch.
HIGH DEFINITION VERSION for Apple TV
Closed Captioning is now supported by iTunes 7.4 and QuickTime since version 7.1.6. Because of the support, we do not have to use the CC sprite that we used before, plus this feature is compatible with Apple devices but not yet available for the Apple TV. There are a few issues as this is a newly supported feature but expect it to improve with future updates.
I hope that this video can help others to closed caption their material. If you find it useful, please send your comments to tecnocato@tecnocato.com.

QuickTime 7.2 and iTunes 7.4 now support CEA-608 standard closed-captions. To view the closed-captions, set “Show closed captioning when available” to ON at the iTunes/QuickTime preferences.
This video is a short video I made with an Everio camera (SD) and iMovie ‘08. I used Annotation Edit to create the captions and Compressor 3 to compress it with an embedded closed captioning track.
This video is just a sample so you can try out closed-captioning under the new supported standard. In the next release I’ll show you how you can create captioned videos. The video is about 20+ minutes long and in high definition so you can expect a pretty large file. Be patient with the up coming download. (depending on final length, the video may be split in sections…)
About the video: I visited the Tortuguero Lagoon located between the towns of Manatí and Vega Baja. Caimans live in the area but these are rare and typically small. It is very safe and an excellent place for fishing and kayaking. I recorded the video by mounting the camera to a monopod. the wind kicks up at the end… you’ll find the closed captions useful.

To share tecnocato with an international audience, I decided to caption my video podcast (in English) some time ago. Needless to say that this is NOT easy and it does consume a lot of resources.
The purpose of this post is to share with you the latest developments and drawbacks from implementing this technology with HD podcasts.
The next episode (#006) will be delivered in both HD and SD resolutions. Due to the demands of decoding HD material (by your device), the “CC” button, that is used to activate captions, will not be available in the HD version. It will stay in the SD version.
